Chemical Dominoes
Project Description: To build a device that performs three chemical reactions in sequence that we had learned in a previous lab. My group built a three step structure with wood materials, a ring stand, a flask, a candle, and some petri dishes (and the chemicals of course). Above in the document explains what chemical reactions took place. Basically what happens is that the balloon fills with air, tips the lever which does two things: Pour a liquid into another to make a bright yellow one, and on the other side the marble rolls down to knock over a candle that ignites the flammable liquid and other substances to produce a green flame.
Reflection: To me, this was a good project, but it should've been done in the first semester because it used last semester's lessons. Instead we used up 4 weeks of the spring semester. Yikes. I think it should've been a shorter project in terms of everyone's work ethic, as it seems like it should be much easier than it costed time wise. However, the reactions were fascinating; I'd like to learn more about that than making wood sculptures. Two things I did well was get the group back on track, and facilitate materials efficiently. Two things to improve on would've been to plan it out better with clear steps, and make sure it is possible by strategy before executing right away. Also we should've managed our time to finish a lot sooner. Looking forward to learning more about reactions to help understand Biochemistry.
