Chemical Equilibrium Project
Project Description:
The goal of this project was to create a social media campaign informing at least 100 people of the dynamic condition-dependent balance of a chemical reaction at equilibrium. It also must have included a supporting research document in which students will synthesize multiple sources on their subject matter. Individuals will choose an appropriate chemical equilibrium topic and social media medium to spread their message (prezi, infographic, youtube video, vine, snapchat, ect.) and supporting document.
I chose to make mine about lactic acid fermentation in muscle cells as opposed to aerobic, cellular respiration. I used instagram because the pictures easily display the content, instagram is used by numerous people, my topic can be sectioned off and neat, and uploading the custom pictures I created was simple. On my instagram account I followed countless people to get to the required 100 accounts and I actually got past it the first day. For my topic I took the time to make all my own diagrams and all my own words because what I found online didn't satisfy me, and I also did this to stand out from the crowd that used sloppy images from google on almost all of their accounts. My three diagrams really show the equilibrium well and demonstrate what happens when muscles run out of oxygen at the molecular-chemical level. I made a few other posts that covered the content of the topic and I also gave some advice that could help the viewers as well.
Reflection:
The chemical equilibrium project was my favorite project this semester; since it was a solo project, I really personalized my project and showed what I can do. The time was a little tight but I probably just should've managed my time better. I think that 100 followers would be much harder if it weren't for the several other accounts that were seeking the same thing. I also think that maybe next time that the directions are a bit more clearer and to get rid of the daily check in; it's a nice idea but a waste of time and a little annoying when you want to jump right in and work on your project research. I think what I liked the most was making my posts because I'm artistic and whatever I can make look good is fun in some way for me. So making these posts from scratch was a type of art i could use and also learn about muscle function at the same time.
From my research, I learned a lot more than I had previously known about the production of lactate and how it affects our muscles. It turns out that lactic acid (lactate) doesn't actually cause muscle soreness; the lower pH from hydrogen ions is what causes it. I found this really interesting because in my AP Biology class I had only breached the surface on this subject. I think that the supporting document should be included with the social media in some way and maybe not be so annotated, rather a really brief summary of what you got from each source. Two things I did well was organizing my social media and making it personalized and aesthetically pleasing. Two things I could've done better was managing my time and maybe making a few more posts to extend the profile of mt social media. The instagram I created is directly below with its 10 posts.
